Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell has handed over his responsibilities to Acting Chief James Beere while he attends state-mandated training, police said this week.
Mitchell, a former police chief in Lubbock, Texas, was appointed in March to replace Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, whom Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao fired in early 2023.
The California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training requires law enforcement officers transferring from out of state to attend a four-week, 160-hour requalification course.
“During this period, Chief Mitchell remains in close contact with city leadership, specifically City Administrator Jestin Johnson to ensure continuity of operations and decision-making,” the police department said on social media.
Beere communicates regularly with Mitchell and is overseeing daily operations in his absence, police said.
Mitchell is expected to return Nov. 1, police said.
