The Brentwood Police Department this Thursday will host a town hall meeting to discuss active shooter training and its procedures for responding to threats at local schools.

The meeting will take place at the Brentwood Community Center, 35 Oak St., beginning at 6 p.m.

Officer Mitchell Brouillette, the event presenter, said the town hall focused on schools is part of a proactive series that raises conversations with the community about various topics, including homelessness, human trafficking and retail theft.

“This is a way for us to be transparent. Sometimes people get frustrated. Let’s say there’s a threat to a school, and we’re able to determine that it’s not a credible threat, but parents want more information,” he said. “There are certain things we can’t put out there publicly if it’s involving a juvenile. So part of this is to help educate.”

Brouillette said attendees will learn about how police respond to emergencies, along with how to recognize signs that a child is struggling and might become someone who could commit a crime.

“All the schools and law enforcement can do if this thing starts, is mitigate the casualties once it’s already started,” he said in regard to school shootings. “The way you prevent it is, it starts in the home.”

During the town hall, attendees will be able to ask questions that will be answered by a panel of law enforcement professionals, including a patrol lieutenant, school resource officer, patrol officer and dispatch supervisor.

Brentwood Union School District Superintendent Dana Eaton said there has been a nationwide increase in threats to schools. He commended the Department for its goal of communicating transparently with the public.

“We continue to be fortunate to operate in a community where our Police Department is a partner in keeping all of our students safe,” Eaton said.
