Deputies in Sonoma County arrested a man suspected of making a threat earlier this week to an elementary school that led to a multiple-agency response and the closure of two schools the following day.
On Monday at 11:36 a.m., the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office was called to Penngrove Elementary School near Petaluma for a possible school threat.
Authorities placed the school on lockdown as a SWAT team, a helicopter, K-9 units and additional law enforcement swarmed the school. Eventually the school was evacuated and parents were instructed to meet their children at the Rancho Adobe Fire Protection District’s Penngrove station.
Detectives determined the suspect, Santa Rosa resident Kevin Harrington, 47, was likely out of the area and continued working to determine his exact location, the Sheriff’s Office said. Investigators believed Harrington was likely in the South Lake Tahoe area.
With assistance from South Lake Tahoe police and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Harrington was located and arrested in Nevada by Douglas County sheriff’s deputies. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of felony criminal threats and possession of a stolen vehicle.
He is now in the custody of Sonoma County on suspicion of felony elder abuse, violating a restraining order, making criminal threats and violating probation.
“We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents and families who trusted the Sheriff’s Office with your loved ones,” said the Sheriff’s Office on social media Wednesday. “We deeply appreciate your trust and cooperation. School threats are scary, fast-moving, and chaotic, but everyone was calm, collected, and supportive.”
Harrington has a court date on Friday at 8:30 a.m. in Sonoma County Superior Court.
