Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit has been awarded $81 million in state funds to extend passenger rail service north from Windsor through Healdsburg, the transit district said.

SMART’s northern extension, which will reduce congestion on U.S. Highway 101, is still awaiting additional grant decisions due in June, the district said Friday in a press release.

“This is such a huge victory for the residents of northern Sonoma County and builds off the state’s $40 million investment that is now being utilized to connect the Sonoma County Airport with the town of Windsor,” state Senate President Pro Tem Mike McGuire said.

The district expects to complete the Healdsburg extension by 2028, said Eric Lucan, chair of the SMART board of directors.

The project was added to the regional transportation plan Wednesday last week by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, according to the transit district. That clears the way for the state to consider two pending grant applications by June to match the latest award.
