Union City’s Public Works Department is working to provide about 2.5 miles of buffered bike lanes in the city by late 2025.

The city has contracted with Bay Cities Paving & Grading Inc. to add bike lanes along Union City Boulevard from Smith Street to the southern city limits at the Alameda County Flood Control Channel Bridge. The project is officially called the Union City Boulevard Bike Lanes Improvement Project

“The Bike Lanes Project represents Union City’s commitment to ensuring our city is a place in which multiple modes of transportation are not only possible, but are actively encouraged,” said Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci in a statement. “The benefits of this project are manifold for individuals of all ages and abilities.”

The project has received over $21 million in funding from various sources and mainly consists of a reconstruction of the existing median area to accommodate bike lane placement. Additionally, the Public Works Department aims to reduce turbulent traffic noise by reconstructing and overlaying the road’s surfaces, moving vehicles closer to the median and away from pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Aside from providing new bike lanes to residents, the project will also improve pedestrian and bicycle crossings and install new storm drain inlets to reduce flooding.

“With a dedicated, buffered lane for cyclists and wide sidewalks for pedestrians, it ensures their safety and eases traffic congestion on our roads, underscoring our dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship,” Dutra-Vernaci said.

Work hours for the bike lanes project will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and work areas will be indicated by temporary barriers. Residents and travelers should exercise caution and expect delays when traveling near construction areas.

According to the Union City Public Works Department, the work for the bike lanes project is expected to be completed by November 2025, pending weather conditions.
