Fremont police sent a message reminding motorists that enforcement of AB 413, the state’s daylighting law addressing parking near intersections, will begin Wednesday.
“California’s citation enforcement starts on January 1, 2025,” the department said in an alert Sunday.
Motorists who park within 20 feet of the approach to a marked or unmarked crosswalk, or 15 feet of the approach to crosswalks where a curb extension is present, could get a ticket starting Wednesday, according to the department.
The goal of the new law is to improve the safety of all roadway users by increasing overall visibility at intersections, the department said.
Though enforcement does not begin until Wednesday, police officials said, “There’s no reason not to start leaving at least 20 feet (or the length of one large car) between your car and a marked/unmarked crosswalk.”
The state law only daylights spots on the “approach side” of the street — the side a vehicle is coming from before reaching an intersection.
Removing the obstruction of parked vehicles at the intersection approaches will allow drivers to have a clear view of pedestrians or bicyclists waiting to cross the street while at the same time allowing pedestrians or bicyclists to see approaching traffic, the department said.
