People who like to fish in Monterey County are invited by state officials to grab their licenses and fishing gear and visit Lake San Antonio.

More than 4,000 pounds of rainbow trout have been planted in the lake, some of which are described as “trophy” size, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The lake was closed for over a week in July due to a massive fish die-off. When the lake reopened on July 22, Bryan Flores, county chief of parks, said the die-off, which closed the lake on July 10, was not due to bacteria, toxins or pollutants that can harm humans.

Instead, officials said at the time they believed it might have been caused by a natural algae phenomenon spurred on by high heat.
