Vallejo Interim Police Chief Jason Ta has been selected by City Manager Andrew Murray to serve his position permanently starting January 2025, the city’s public information office said.
Ta joined the Vallejo Police Department in 2021 as a deputy chief before serving as its interim police chief in November 2022.
Ta’s accomplishments during his time as the interim chief include stabilizing staffing levels and adopting crime-reduction technologies, among others, according to the public information office.
Prior to joining Vallejo police, Ta was with the San Jose Police Department for 27 years where he attained the rank of captain. He served the city in multiple capacities through patrol, investigations, field training, traffic enforcement, auditing and community services.
During the city’s search for the next police chief, city staff held three community meetings and a community survey to gather public input on what community members would like to see from a police chief.
The city also had four separate interview panels to assess the candidates. Two of the panels were composed of community members, one was made of professionals, and another one was for city staff personnel.
All three final candidates for the position were people of color.
