Pinole police recently used new, cutting-edge technology to corral alleged car thieves without a vehicle pursuit.
At 4:26 p.m. on Thursday, officers encountered a stolen vehicle that failed to yield. Police deployed StarChase, a GPS tracking system designed to enhance the safety of high-speed pursuits.
During the pursuit, officers launched a small GPS tracker that stuck to the vehicle, allowing real-time tracking without the need for a dangerous high-speed chase. This technology provided continuous updates on the vehicle’s location, enabling officers to safely monitor the situation.
The vehicle eventually entered Hercules, where Hercules police assisted by deploying spike strips, successfully disabling all four tires of the stolen car.
The suspects then fled on foot but were quickly apprehended by officers. Their names were not immediately released.
