The graduation rate in Santa Rosa City Schools, facing bankruptcy by the end of the year, climbed to 86.3%, a two-point gain from the rate before the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said Saturday.

The attainment “reflects students’ resilience and the unwavering support of their teachers, families, and counselors,” Assistant Superintendent Roderick Castro said in a press release.

Statewide, the four-year cohort graduation rate for the class of 2024 is 86.4%, according to the California Department of Education.

A significant enrollment decline in Sonoma County’s largest school district has led to an estimated $20 million budget shortfall, according to a report by the district’s Fiscal Stabilization Advisory Committee, which is weighing school closures.

Without significant reductions, the district serving 15,000 students will be bankrupt by the end of the year, risking a state takeover, the panel has said.
