Cloverdale have suspended the sale and use of state-approved “safe and sane” fireworks.
Cloverdale is the only city in Sonoma County that allows the sale and use of fireworks.
The decision was made by the City of Cloverdale, Cloverdale Police Department and the Cloverdale Fire Protection District in response to a red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service. The warning was set to expire at 11 p.m. Tuesday, but has now been extended until 5 a.m. Friday. Cloverdale is also under an excessive heat warning through 11 p.m. next Tuesday.
“This decision is driven by the critical fire weather conditions currently affecting our area including a combination of high wind gusts, high temperatures and low humidities,” the Cloverdale Police Department said. “The decision to suspend the sale and use of state-approved fireworks was made after careful and thorough consideration and made based on fire threats to our community.”
Despite the suspension of the sale and discharge of fireworks, the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display at Cloverdale High School is scheduled to take place on Thursday. Fire personnel will be onsite during the event to monitor conditions. However, threatening weather conditions could result in the display’s cancelation.
