A man was arrested on suspicion of illegally dumping petroleum waste into a Stockton waterway, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said.
Multiple agencies responded on Sept. 28, 2024 to a report of petroleum product released near the Smith Canal in Stockton. The US Coast Guard and other agencies responded to the incident and recovered the oil from the waterway and removed impacted soil along the canal, the CDFW said.
Tips from the community and other investigating lead to the arrest of David Andrew Sump, who was booked on suspicion of dumping approximately 280 gallons of waste oil into the canal and its surroundings.
The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office has charged Sump with alleged destruction of public property and disposal of hazardous waste, plus other misdemeanor charges, CDFW said.
