Deputies in Marin County have arrested an Uber driver suspected of carrying out financial scams that targeted seniors, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Zhuowen Yu, 43, is suspected in at least two cases in San Rafael and Point Reyes and is accused of defrauding people of at least $64,000, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
According to investigators, the alleged schemes involved notifying victims that their Apple ID or Adobe Acrobat accounts were “compromised.” The suspects allegedly told the victims to withdraw cash, and a courier would collect the money to protect it from further compromise.
Deputies used the county’s automated license plate readers to connect both cases to Yu after his vehicle was allegedly identified.
Yu, who is listed as being a driver for Uber in jail records, was found in his vehicle on March 4 in South San Francisco by the airport and was detained by police there.
The Sheriff’s Office is working on identifying additional suspects involved.
Yu was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of grand theft, financial elder abuse, and criminal conspiracy, all felonies. He is being held without bail.
