Sunnyvale has announced the retirement of Public Safety Chief Phan Ngo after more than three decades in law enforcement.

“Our city will remember Chief Ngo for his resolute work in our community, vigorously supporting both our first responders, and fostering a culture of community partnership,” said Sunnyvale City Manager Tim Kirby in a Wednesday statement released by the city.

Ngo became chief of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety in 2017, but has spent 36 years in law enforcement, according to the city. He started out at the San Jose Police Department in 1989, where he rose to the rank of deputy chief.

“Community engagement, dedication, and City pride have cemented my tenure in Sunnyvale,” said Ngo in a statement released by the city. “I have always strived to amplify what it really means to be in law enforcement, working closely with our residents and embracing our diverse community.”

Ngo has been recognized by the city of San Jose and Santa Clara County for his dedication and service to the Vietnamese community. He also led the county’s first drone program for first responders and modernized the city’s emergency operations center, the city said.

Sunnyvale will be carrying out a nationwide recruitment for Ngo’s replacement, the city said. Community members are encouraged to take part in a survey about the process of choosing a new chief.
