Health officials announced a temporary ban on swimming at Lodi Lake after tests Wednesday showed unsafe levels of bacteria, the Lodi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department said.

The department said the water at the lake is typically tested for safety but recent high temperatures and heat waves throughout the Central Valley affected the water conditions.

Although swimmers are not allowed in the lake, the beach and wading pool area remain open.

City officials said the Lodi Boathouse is not affected by the lake closure.

Friday’s announcement of the swimming restrictions came less than a day after Lodi Park celebrated its grand reopening for Fourth of July celebrants after undergoing months of renovations. Some of that $2.4 million project remains to be completed in the coming months.
