
A San Francisco man who served in the Biden administration at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has been appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to a leadership role in California’s health care services.
Brian Kaplun was named deputy secretary for policy and strategic planning at the state’s Health and Human Services Agency, the governor’s office said Friday.
Kaplun held several roles at HHS from 2022 to 2025, including senior advisor and director of strategic initiatives for the Office of the Secretary. He was previously a legislative aide specializing in health policy for Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin.
Compensation for the position is $206,628, the governor’s office said.
