Newly-released body camera footage shows the tense moments leading up to the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man by Antioch officers last month.
Police on Thursday provided the video and more details of their encounter with David Bahrami on June 30 in the 3800 block of Osprey Drive.
A caller identifed as Bahrami can be heard on audio after calling police dispatch about 7:15 a.m., saying “Hi, I’m about to kill someone. My address is Osprey Drive, Antioch, California.”
When asked, he didn’t give a name and told dispatchers he was at the home with his family, repeatedly asking when police would arrive.
Police said the Angelo Quinto Community Response Team, which normally deals with mental health crisis calls, wasn’t sent because of safety concerns during prior calls to the home.
Instead, police tried to contact the family and called Bahrami in an effort to deescalate the situation.
Bahrami refused to allow officers to speak with his family and he can be heard on audio from the call threatening to kill his neighbor. He also said he fell and his arm was bleeding, but didn’t describe how it happened.
Waiting around the corner
While they had him on the line, officers positioned themselves around the corner and out of sight. An Officer Merrill can be heard asking him to come to the end of the street to speak with them.
When Bahrami walked into their sightline, he was ordered to stop and get on the ground. Instead, the video shows the suspect removing a large kitchen knife from his waistband and running at officers.
Less-lethal weapons were used initially, but the video shows Bahrami still advancing while holding the knife. The officers then fired several times, hitting the suspect. He dropped to the ground and eventually let go of the knife, the video shows.
Officers and paramedics then gave him medical aid, but he died at the scene.
Police said Bahrami’s family and neighbor were not injured. None of the officers involved were injured and they are on paid administrative leave, police said Thursday.
The video doesn’t provide full names for the officers who fired, only saying that “Officer Merrill and Officer Lorono discharged their service weapons.”
The department’s investigations bureau is investigating the shooting with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
