Eight illegal firearms were collected in a gun buyback event in Stockton this past Saturday, police said.

Officers collected a total of 167 firearms, eight of which police said were illegal, and distributed about $35,000 in cash gift cards. Cards in the amount of $200 and $400 were distributed depending on the type of firearm.

All firearms collected will be destroyed, police said.

The July 20 event, held in a parking lot on North Edison Street, was the police department’s fourth gun buyback event as part of its gun violence reduction strategy. The purpose is to collect firearms that are no longer wanted, to prevent them from landing in the wrong hands, police said.

“The citizens who participated were very appreciative of the event and motivated to participate,” said Officer David Scott.
