The SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is seeking egg donations to help feed the 145 wild animals currently in their care.

With species ranging from opossums and raccoons to scrub jays and gulls, these protein-rich eggs are essential for their recovery and growth, according to the SPCA.

Eggs play a vital role in the diet of these animals, providing essential nutrients that help them grow strong and healthy. The Wildlife Center serves hard-boiled or scrambled eggs to adult animals recovering from injuries and to orphaned babies who are too young to fend for themselves in the wild. For baby raccoons transitioning from bottle-feeding, a custard made from raccoon formula and eggs is used to introduce them to solid foods.

Community members can contribute by bringing raw eggs to the SPCA Wildlife Center, located at 1002 Monterey-Salinas Highway in Salinas, daily between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eggs past their ‘best by’ date are also welcome. For those unable to donate eggs, financial contributions can be made online at www.spcamc.org/donate or by calling (831) 373-2631.

The SPCA Wildlife Center is the only full-service wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Monterey County, operating under permits from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The center does not receive government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of donors. Each year, the center admits over 2,500 animals for treatment and care.

In addition to providing critical care for wild animals, SPCA Monterey County also shelters homeless, neglected, and abused pets and livestock. Established in 1905, the nonprofit, independent, donor-supported humane society serves the animals and people of Monterey County with a wide range of services including humane education, animal cruelty investigation, and rescue operations.
