Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president in the November election, on Tuesday announced she is selecting Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate.

Democrats have rallied around Harris — the former San Francisco district attorney, state attorney general and U.S. Senator — to be the party’s candidate to face former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump in the Nov. 5 election after President Joe Biden last month announced he would not seek reelection.

Harris had sought a vice presidential candidate to join her on the ticket and on social media Tuesday announced her pick was Walz, who has served as Minnesota’s governor since 2019. Before that and a 12-year stint in the U.S. House of Representatives, Walz taught at a high school, coached the school’s football team to its first state championship, and served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

“As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his,” Harris wrote. “It’s great to have him on the team.”

Walz in response said on social media it was “the honor of a lifetime” to join Harris as her vice presidential candidate.

“Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible. It reminds me a bit of the first day of school,” he wrote. “So, let’s get this done, folks!”
