Pesticide will be sprayed in a portion of San Jose next week after mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile virus were found there, the Santa Clara County Vector Control District announced.

The spraying will take place Tuesday starting around 10 p.m. in the area of ZIP code 95123 — centered in the area of Lean and Calero avenues — and will conclude two to four hours later.

An interactive map of the affected area can be accessed online and the vector control district is sending mailed notices, emails and messages through the county’s AlertSCC warning systems to people living there, as well as posting on various social media platforms about the plans.

People do not need to relocate during the treatment of the ultra-low volume pesticide, but those wanting to take extra precautions can keep family members and pets inside with windows and doors shut.

West Nile virus does not cause symptoms in most people, but for some it can cause fever, headaches, body aches, and in the worst cases, significant neurological damage or death. A person died in Contra Costa County of the virus earlier this year.

Anyone with questions about the vector control district’s mosquito treatments can call a hotline at 408-282-3114 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays or via email.
