San Joaquin Delta College trustee Valerie Stewart-Green has died, according to an announcement this week from the college.
Stewart-Green was serving as the clerk of the board with her term set to expire in November — the seat is open for the Nov. 5 general election.
The college did not share details regarding the death of the trustee but said they were notified by family over the weekend.
The longtime Tracy resident had worked at Delta College for 22 years as an employee before retiring then coming back to serve on the board in 2022.
She represented Area 6, which included the communities of Tracy and Mountain House.
In October 2022, Stewart-Green was selected to serve on the governing board after the death of trustee Teresa Brown in September of that year.
When she was appointed to the board she said, “I want to make sure that our students have the best opportunities for education and are successful, and that we do what is best for the community.”
Delta College superintendent/president Lisa Aguilera Lawrenson said she worked with Stewart-Green in both her roles as an employee and on the board.
“She was a passionate supporter of students, especially students from underserved communities. She wanted to see all students have access to the opportunities the college offered,” Aguilera Lawrenson said in a statement. “She will be greatly missed by the campus community, and I am grateful for the dedication with which she served the District. I send my deepest condolences to her loved ones.”
Board of Trustees president Charles Jennings said in a statement that he deeply valued the opportunity to work with Stewart-Green for almost 25 years.
“Her commitment to the college’s mission was always paramount in her service to the college,” Jennings said. “Since her retirement, she did not fail to step up when her community needed her and continued to work tirelessly as a trustee on their behalf.”
