Folks who are fishing for something to do in the Bay Area during the upcoming Labor Day weekend are in luck — there’s a lot going on from Friday through the official holiday on Monday, Sept. 2.
Among other things, there’s Alameda’s day-long free Crab Cove Fish Festival, where festivalgoers can play fish games, view large freshwater fish up close and enjoy other fishy amusements. The event takes place Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Doug Siden Visitor Center, Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach, 1252 McKay Ave.
Also, Saturday is the last of two free fishing days of the year when it is possible to fish without a sport fishing license, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Details and a list of Bay Area fishing locations are available on the department’s website.
Abandoning the fish theme but continuing the critter connection, also on Saturday is San Francisco’s “Dog Days of Summer” event, with a pet parade, dog costume contest, dance competition and more. The event takes place at The Crossing at East Cut, 250 Main St.
Starting at 11 a.m., the Dog Days event is “a free monthly outdoor brunch party for you and your best friend,” according to the website, but if your fish is your best friend, probably don’t bring them. More information can be found on the Into the Streets website.
If animals aren’t your thing, here’s an event devoid of canines, bovines or felines, but promising to be exciting: a skydive jump and flyover at 6:20 p.m. and a drone demo at 8 p.m. At the Watsonville Municipal Airport’s annual Fire in the Sky and Airport Open House event Saturday.
The overall event begins at 4:30 p.m. at the airport, 100 Aviation Way, Watsonville.
