An affordable housing waitlist will open in July for limited spaces in subsidized three-bedroom units in Sonoma County.
The Sonoma County Housing Authority will begin accepting applications for units that are included in the county’s Project-Based Vouchers program, which allows developers to apply for a limited number of units to become eligible for federal subsidies under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 8 program.
Eligible applicants for the units are county residents who are considered extremely low-income, which is defined by the federal government as having income that is 30 percent or less than the Area Median Income, or AMI. A family of four would qualify if they make $37,750 or less per year.
The properties included in the affordable housing lottery include: Alta Madrone Apartments in Sonoma; Fetters Apartments in Sonoma; Logan Place in Petaluma; Crossroads Apartments in Santa Rosa; Fife Creek Commons in Guerneville; Windsor Redwoods Apartments in Windsor; and The Randall Apartments in Healdsburg.
Applications can be found online starting on July 1. Applications are also available at the Housing Authority’s office in Santa Rosa, at 1440 Guerneville Road. The office is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The program is designed for people who already have housing vouchers but cannot find available units. Applications for general housing vouchers are closed until the end of 2025.
The three-bedroom units are typically assigned to households of between five and seven people. Additional Project-Based Voucher lotteries will open in the coming months for other household sizes and income levels, according to the county.
The Housing Authority also warned applicants to avoid fake websites that mimic the county’s Section 8 housing application site. The county’s application site will not ask for any payment of fees or credit card numbers when applying.
