Severe weather shelters will open Monday night in Santa Cruz and Watsonville to protect unhoused residents from cold weather and possible flooding.

The temporary shelters will be open from 8 p.m. Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Santa Cruz Veterans Hall and the Watsonville Veterans Hall, according to city and county officials.

Capacity at the two shelters is limited and lineup begins one hour prior to the shelters’ openings.

Beds will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, with preference for people with disabilities and those with significant health and safety risks sleeping outdoors.

Guests will be provided with cots, blankets, and ready-to-eat meals. Pets are allowed if they are leashed and can be kept under voice control. No aggressive animals will be allowed at shelter sites.

Food will be available once intakes and bed assignments are completed. Belongings must fit in small storage areas near bed assignments.

The shelter sites will be operated by People First of Santa Cruz County.

The Santa Cruz Veterans Hall is located at 846 Front St. in Santa Cruz.

The Watsonville Veterans Hall is at 215 East Beach St. in Watsonville.
