A man convicted of the notorious “Gone Girl” kidnapping of a Vallejo woman in 2015 that sparked a Netflix docuseries was convicted last week of two home invasions and sexual assaults in Santa Clara County in 2009.

Matthew Muller, 47, was convicted in 2016 of the Vallejo kidnapping of Denise Huskins, which was featured in the Netflix series “American Nightmare” in 2024. The case gained widespread attention after police publicly speculated that the case could have been staged — and were ultimately proven wrong.

Six years before Muller drugged and sexually assaulted Huskins, kidnapping her and her boyfriend in Vallejo, he broke into a home in Mountain View, and, less than three weeks later, another home in Palo Alto.

Both break-ins involved druggings and sexual assaults, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release on Friday.

“This extremely dangerous person left a trail of traumatized and terrified victims,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. “It took the collective courage of his victims and determined law enforcement officers to stop him. This nightmare is over.”

In September 2009, Muller broke into the Mountain View woman’s home, assaulted her, tied her up and forced her to drink a “concoction” of drugs. He told the victim he was going to rape her, but the victim convinced him not to. The DA’s Office said Muller then told the victim to get a dog and left.

In October that year, he broke into a Palo Alto home and repeated his crimes of tying the victim and drugging her. He began to sexually assault her but was persuaded to stop. He also offered that victim “crime prevention advice” before leaving, prosecutors said.

Authorities believe Muller, who is a Harvard graduate and former U.S. Marine, could be responsible for other, similar crimes. He is facing kidnapping for ransom charges in Contra Costa County.

He pleaded guilty to the Mountain View and Palo Alto invasions and sexual assaults. He faces sentencing for those crimes on Feb. 21. He is already serving a 40-year sentence in federal prison for the Vallejo kidnapping and a violent home invasion in Dublin. He faces life in prison for the new convictions.
