San Francisco’s undercover police officers, concentrating on violent crime, auto burglaries, drug dealing and retail theft, increased felony arrests by 20% in 2024, the department said.

The Citywide Plainclothes team made 601 felony arrests compared with 500 the previous year, the police department said Friday in a press release. The unit seized 73 firearms, a 16.7 percent gain from 50 in 2023.

Automated license plate readers and drones, new technologies acquired by the SFPD in 2024, significantly helped plainclothes operations, the department said.

Overall, crime in 2024 was the lowest in 20 years, police said.

San Francisco’s homicide rate for the year fell to the lowest since 1960, while property crimes such as auto burglaries decreased by 54%, police said
