Want to hear some serious trash talk? Eight garbage truck drivers from San Francisco are finalists in a national competition.
The drivers have advanced to the finals of the National Waste & Recycling Association Driver of the Year competition. All eight work for Recology, San Francisco’s employee-owned garbage and recycling company.
To enter the competition, drivers must have zero accidents and zero injuries. And San Francisco is one of the toughest cities in America to drive garbage trucks, when you consider the hills, narrow streets, and urban density.

The winners of the association’s Driver of the Year competition will be announced later this month and honored during a special awards ceremony at Waste Expo 2025, the industry’s largest conference, in Las Vegas on May 5.
“Providing excellent customer service, like safe driving, is essential to being the best in this field,” a Recology spokesman said in a statement. “Collectively, the eight finalists have served San Francisco customers for 230 years.”
Recology, formerly known as Norcal Waste Systems, provides waste collection, composting, recycling, and hazardous waste management services, operating under the name Recology San Francisco.
