The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office has two new team members after bringing in the department’s second and third therapy dogs.

“These brown bundles of fluff make eyes light up and brings smiles to the faces of people in our community, many of whom are undergoing a crisis and need our help,” said Sheriff Christina Corpus. “Our therapy K-9s put minds at ease and help build bridges with our community.”

The 8-month-old dogs, Maverick and Teddy, will be joining the department’s existing dog, Ben, to help calm crime victims and other related tasks. Ben enjoys going to community events and schools and was able to celebrate his 100th deployment recently. He has also been utilized during the forensic interview process to bring comfort to victims of crimes.

Corpus began the K-9 therapy program in December 2023. All three dogs are goldendoodles. Maverick will work in the Coastside region and is being handled by Deputy Andrea Dion, while Teddy will work in the Bayside communities with handler Deputy James Hajik.
