The Monterey Regional Airport has been awarded new federal funding of over $37 million to modernize the airport.

U.S. Rep. Jimmy Panetta said in a statement that he secured federal grants awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program supporting airport modernization including new terminal work, runway and tarmac improvements and new aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment.

This year, the Airport Improvement Program has invested more than $1.1 billion in airport infrastructure projects around the country to improve runways, taxiways, signage, lighting, and markings, Panetta said.

The airport is receiving four grants totaling $37,306,785:

• $2,815,801 for runway improvements.

• $16,788,053 for apron tarmac improvements. An apron is a designated area at an airport where aircraft are parked, loaded, unloaded, refueled, maintained and boarded.

• $958,274 for aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment.

• $16,744,657 for landside terminal improvements.

“This significant federal investment in the Monterey Regional Airport will enhance the safety, security, and passenger experience for travelers all across our 19th Congressional District.”

“This significant federal investment in the Monterey Regional Airport will enhance the safety, security, and passenger experience for travelers all across our 19th Congressional District,” Panetta said in a statement.

The funds will be used to complete the new apron and auto parking lot to support the replacement terminal, said Michael LaPierre, Monterey Regional Airport Executive Director.

“The Airport continues to be grateful for the assistance of Congressman Panetta in our effort to make Monterey Regional Airport as safe as it can be and to prepare the airport for a bright future ahead,” LaPierre said.
