San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is planning to open a law enforcement child day care center exclusively for San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office employees.

The agency said it has a lease for the child day care center in North Fair Oaks and is prepared to move forward.

“The challenges of law enforcement don’t stop at the end of a shift,” said Sheriff Christina Corpus. “Our sworn and professional staff face the same pressures of balancing work and family that many do, but with the added complexity of a demanding and often unpredictable profession.

The county hopes that the new center will help save money by retaining staff and reducing hiring costs.

“By supporting the well-being of our law enforcement families, this initiative also strengthens the safety and security of the communities we serve,” Corpus said. “When our employees are assured that their children are in a caring environment just steps away, they can better focus on protecting and serving our residents.”

“By prioritizing employee and family needs, we’re sending a strong message: law enforcement is a career for everyone, and we’re committed to building an inclusive and diverse future.”

The department also hopes the program will help them achieve their goal of having 30% of academy classes made up by women by 2030.

“We are proud to remove barriers for women looking to join or advance in our profession,” Corpus said. “By prioritizing employee and family needs, we’re sending a strong message: law enforcement is a career for everyone, and we’re committed to building an inclusive and diverse future.”

San Mateo County’s law enforcement child care center would be the first in Northern California, but San Diego Police Department has a similar program.
